On this post, we will talk a little bit about the process of getting a SIM CARD in Madrid, if you really need to get it depending of where are you from and the best mobile plans that you can get from the different mobile companies.
¿Do I really need a SIM Card in Madrid?
If you are coming from any country located in EU probably not, because in 2017 the European Union end the roaming charges and create the EU Wide Roaming Regulations, which means, that if you already have mobile SIM CARD or mobile plan from any country inside de EU your services won`t be interrupted and you won`t have to pay any additional fees to navigate or use your mobile services while you are in Madrid.
However, if you are coming to Madrid, either for an Erasmus, Aur Pair, work or Exchange Language, that implies a longer period of time, probably it will be much better, and you can get more benefits, get a SIM CARD from the mobile companies located in Madrid.
Traveling from outside EU means that you must get a Spanish SIM CARD, because, your local mobile company can charge you with really expensive roaming fees in order to stay connected outside your country, specially if you are staying for a long term in Madrid.
If you are coming from a country outside the EU:
- Before your arrival in Madrid, extract your SIM CARD or keep it on Airplane Mode to avoid any roaming fees while you get your Spanish SIM CARD.
- Don`t forget to check that your Mobile Phone is unlocked to use any SIM CARD
Before continue with the article, we know that you can hire either a Contract Cell Phone Plan or a Prepaid SIM CARD, in our case, we are going to focus on the Prepaid SIM CARD, because Mobile Contracts in Spain can be really difficult to get; Bank accounts, stay minimum of 12 months with the contract, proof of address, etc.

- Show your Passport or EU ID

Also, you can get the Prepaid SIM CARDS from a “Locutorio”, Bazar Stores located all around Madrid. The best way to identify if they sell SIM CARDS is when you can see the Logo of the mobile companies outside the store.

If you are going to use a Prepaid SIM CARD you will Pay as you go, that means that you can charge your Mobile Plan with a specific amount of money and use until runs out, basically, that’s how the Prepaid SIM CARDS works, it depends how much you want to spent in Data, calls or messages. Normally, all this Prepaid Plans work for a period of 30 days, but in the case that you use all your Data, you can just go to a store or “Locutorio” and charge more to renew your plan.
